I noticed in our Christmas pageant Sunday at Trinity that "Mary" (a young girl) rode the pony into church sidesaddle. Like the cartoon. Was that common in the first century?
One is reminded of the Eastern iconographic tradition in which Christ rides his donkey side-saddle - the traditional posture of a woman, not a "warrier".
